The Univ North development for University College, Oxford, represents a landmark student residential project in North Oxford, designed to blend modern academic life with environmental sensitivity and architectural distinction.

Located between Staverton, Banbury, Rawlinson, and Woodstock Roads, the scheme delivers up to 150 student rooms in thoughtfully planned study bedrooms, accessible units, and family accommodation, complemented by gym, café,nursery, and flexible study spaces.

The project is notable for its cohesive landscape-led design, which integrates renovated heritage orchards, outdoor gardens, and accessible routes, ensuring maximum benefit from natural light and environmental features.

With a clear focus on sustainability, Univ North employs high levels of insulation, draught exclusion, and inherent air tightness, alongside air source heat pumps and advanced heat recovery ventilation. Although not Passivhaus certified, these choices reflect strong Passivhaus principles, delivering energy efficiency and comfort for residents while minimising environmental impact.

Other highlights include accessible rooms for students with additional needs, and a planned biodiversity net gain of 20.62% over 30 years, achieved through tree planting, hedgerow creation, and wildflower meadows.

The scheme relieves pressure on Oxford’s housing market and reaffirms the College’s ambition to house their own students in high-quality accommodation within a leafy North Oxford Conservation Area. As part of etch’s portfolio, Univ North demonstrates expertise in designing forward-looking, sustainable student environments.

etch have provided MEP Consultancy services on the project and have supported the College to deliver and exceptional development.

The scheme also included the comprehensive heritage retrofit of an existing north Oxford Villa which is at the gateway to the site.
