Refurbishment and conversion of the Margaret Harte Ward into a new Imaging Department facility.

This project involved the refurbishment and conversion of the former Margaret Harte Ward within the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital estate in Stanmore, transforming the existing single-storey ward into a state-of-the-art imaging facility. Originally constructed during the Second World War for troop convalescence, the building presented unique constraints that required careful consideration throughout the design and delivery stages.

The new imaging department accommodates three advanced imaging systems, including a pioneering EOS imaging system, the first of its kind in the UK, significantly enhancing the Trust’s capability to deliver world-leading orthopaedic treatment and patient care. The facility also incorporates a new patient reception and waiting area, changing facilities, staff welfare spaces, write-up areas, offices, and dedicated plant areas to support the upgraded services infrastructure.

etch  were appointed to deliver MEP consultancy services, working collaboratively with Bristow Consulting, Shek Architects, and Wareham & Associates to develop a comprehensive RIBA Stage 3 performance specification for tender. Friar Green Construction subsequently delivered the project and handed over in November 2024.

A full replacement of the building services was undertaken, including the integration of HTM-compliant mechanical ventilation systems designed to meet the stringent clinical and environmental requirements of the facility. Particular attention was given to the imaging suites, where precise coordination was essential to achieve the controlled conditions required for optimal equipment performance.

The project demanded close and continuous engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including clinical staff, end users, the Trust’s estates and facilities teams, and the imaging equipment manufacturer. Delivered within a challenging programme, the scheme was carefully managed to ensure the facility became operational in line with key clinical trial milestones and patient service requirements.
