Building Physics and Sustainability
At Etch Associates, we believe that addressing climate change is not just an ambition but a shared responsibility. Our goal is to create buildings that are low-carbon, resilient, and regenerative by design.
Our Building Physics and Sustainability team works at the intersection of science, design and innovation. We collaborate with architects, engineers and clients to shape buildings that optimise form, fabric and systems in response to environmental conditions, enhancing wellbeing and using resources responsibly.
From the earliest concept through to detailed design and post-occupancy, we apply building physics principles to understand and optimise performance, balancing daylight, ventilation, thermal comfort, and energy use. Thermal comfort and overheating risk sit at the forefront of modern building performance challenges. We undertake detailed dynamic modelling, fabric optimisation and ventilation strategy analysis to ensure spaces remain stable, healthy and comfortable throughout the year. By assessing comfort from the earliest stages and stress-testing designs under future climate scenarios, we help teams avoid late-stage compliance issues and deliver buildings that work as well in practice as they do on paper.
Our approach integrates sustainability strategies such as net zero carbon, circular economy principles, whole life carbon, water efficiency, health and wellbeing and adaptability and resilience.
We work across all sectors, from high-performance laboratories to sensitive refurbishments and adaptive re-use projects. Our aim is to help clients meet and exceed environmental performance targets while creating spaces that are both efficient and enriching.
A key strength of our service lies in the integration of architecture and building services. Our building physics engineers act as a technical coordinator, aligning passive design, fabric performance and MEP system requirements to achieve high-performing buildings without compromising architectural intent. Through early-stage modelling, performance testing and collaborative design support, we help teams make informed decisions, resolve competing priorities and optimise energy pathways, comfort and usability simultaneously. The result is a design that not only looks right, but operates efficiently, comfortably and predictably throughout its life.
